Historical Evolution:The Tourism Management Department of Guangxi University was established in 1999, and initially recruited undergraduate students and academic master's students by the School of Social Sciences and Management and the School of Foreign Languages. In 2005, it was integrated into the Tourism Management Department of the School of Business.
Faculty:As of September 2023, the Tourism Management Department of Guangxi University has 12 full-time teachers, including 5 professors, 5 associate professors, and 2 lecturers. Among the full-time professors, 10 hold doctoral degree, and 4 are doctoral supervisors. There have 1 recipient of the "Xiangjiang Scholar Program", 1 recipient of the "Baogang Excellent Teacher Award", 2 recipients of the "National Tourism Administration's Youth Experts in Tourism", 1 recipient of the "New Era Tourism Industry Female Role Model Scholar", 1 "Guangxi Higher Education High-level Innovation Team", 1 recipient of the "Guangxi Higher Education Outstanding Scholar", 1 recipient of the provincial "Labor Medal of May 1st", 1 young teacher awarded the "Second Prize in the National University Young Teacher Teaching Competition", and 1 recipient of the "Second Prize in the National Multimedia Courseware Competition".
Discipline Construction:In 2010, the Tourism Management Department obtained the first batch of national MTA authorization. In 2018, the School of Business obtained the first-level doctoral degree authorization for "Business Administration" and was included in the construction list of the provincial-ministerial co-constructed first-class discipline "Applied Economics and Modern Service Industry Discipline Group". As a component of Guangxi University's "Applied Economics and Modern Service Industry Discipline Group", the tourism management program has entered the provincial-ministerial co-constructed first-class discipline construction and has now formed a complete multi-level tourism talent training system of "Bachelor-Master-Doctor", with qualifications for tourism management undergraduate, academic master's, professional master's (MTA), and doctoral enrollment. In 2021, the Tourism Management program of Guangxi University was selected as a "National First-class Undergraduate Program Construction Site." In 2023, the Tourism Management program of Guangxi University was rated as "Grade A" in the ranking of majors in Chinese universities by Shanghai Ranking's Chinese University Subject Rankings (CUSR).
Program Objectives: Closely adhering to national strategies such as "High-quality Development of Tourism," "China-ASEAN Community of Shared Future," and the construction of Guangxi as a "World-class Tourist Destination", it aims to cultivate leading tourism talents with social responsibility, innovative spirit, practical ability, legal awareness, and international vision, who possess good tourism knowledge structure and scientific management capabilities. The goal is to build a distinctive and well-known tourism management program in ASEAN countries and domestically.
Academic Research:In the recent five years, the department has hosted 8 National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation projects, 1 provincial key research and development plan. It has published 8 academic monographs and over 150 research papers in journals such as "Tourism Management", "Annals of Tourism Research" and "Tourism Tribune", including 2 highly cited papers and over 20 SSCI/SCI papers. The research results have won 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, and 3 third prizes of Guangxi Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards. Multiple policy advice reports have garnered approval from provincial and ministerial leaders.
